Cha Am Hua Hin and West
This is the playground of the rich and famous – but you wouldn’t know it.
Discovered by the Thai king in the early 1920s, Hua Hin is a sleepy seaside resort that has managed to retain much of its old world charm. Situated just two hours by car or train from Bangkok, the area attracts wealthy Thai locals and ex pats, who have weekend retreats here, or book family holidays.
It is also home to the current King who resides in the magnificent palace, known as Klai Kangwon (Far From Worries).
Along with royalty, Hua Hin is becoming a haven for Hollywood celebrities who flock to the world’s most exclusive spa, Chiva Som, for juice fasts, massages and meditation.
Despite the fact all the big hotel chains have properties here, Hua Hin has a laidback, sleepy charm, the type of place you come to lie on a beach, wander the markets, and eat and drink.
1. Visit the Klai Kangwon Palace, where the current king resides. The outer palace grounds are open for walkers and joggers from 4pm to 7pm daily.
2. Celebrity spotting. David Beckham, Hugh Grant and Naomi Campbell are regulars at the spa and health retreat, Chiva Som.
3. Get clothes made at the ubiquitous tailor shops that line the streets
4. Wander through the night markets and enjoy a dinner of freshly cooked seafood.
