Khao Lak and Phang Nga
Six years after this beachside paradise was ripped apart in the devastating Boxing Day tsunami, tourism is thriving.
Five-star resorts have been rebuilt, the restaurant and bar scene is lively (but chilled), and business at the many dive companies is booming.
Situated in southern Thailand, about an hour from Phuket International Airport, Khao Lak is where you come to swim, relax and dive.
Khao Lak is in Phang Nga province, an area lined with unspoilt beaches and surrounded by lush national parks. It is also the gateway to some of the world’s best dive spots, including the Surin and Similan islands, which are renowned for their colourful coral and abundant marine life.
For those who can drag themselves away from their hotel pool or the beach, there is jungle trekking, rafting, jeep safaris, elephant rides, and stunning waterfalls to cool off in.
There is a great range of accommodation on offer, from basic bungalows to luxury hotels.
-->1. Trek in Khaolak-Lam Roo National Park
2. Visit waterfalls such as Saeng Thong, Lam Roo and Chong Fa
3. Take a boat cruise through the Phang Nga Bay
4. Dive at world-class spots
5. Jeep safari
